Abstract

To date, only the area of the "Secche della Meloria" was established as a Marine Protected Area by Decree of the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea of 21 October 2009, which also approved the Regulations (by decree of 18 April 2014 and subsequent amendments of 18 July 2016). This marine protected area, the first in Tuscany, located in the sea off the Livorno and Pisa coasts, is characterised by the presence of marine habitats of extraordinary landscape and conservation value, consisting of alternating rocky areas with the characteristic basin-like seabed typical of the area and Posidonia meadows (a priority habitat under the Habitats Directive). 
The other areas include In particular, the areas on the islands of Giannutri, Gorgona, Capraia, Pianosa and Montecristo correspond to the protection areas at sea already provided for in the current planning of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
