Monthly statistics on the movement of customers in accommodation establishments have been compiled regularly by Istat since 1957 and represent the main source of information on domestic tourism available in Italy. The survey quantifies, for each month and for each municipality, the arrivals and presences of customers (residents and non-residents) according to the category of establishment and type of establishment and according to the foreign country or Italian region of residence. The most interesting aspect of the data lies in the possibility of articulating the tourist movement of customers according to all possible combinations of the variables considered, so as to allow an in-depth analysis of the relationships between them. ISTAT also provides for the calculation of hotel capacity utilisation indices.  These bed indices are made up of the ratios between the admissions recorded in the establishments and the availability of beds in the establishments and are divided into 'net' occupancy indices, if the availability refers to the days when the establishments are actually open, and 'gross' occupancy indices, if it refers to the potential of the days before seasonal closures. The net occupancy index of hotel rooms, on the other hand, is calculated as the ratio between the room-days occupied in the month and the number of room-days available in the month for hotels and similar establishments.
